Viewed through the lens of r/accelerate’s recent bans on users experiencing chatbot-induced delusions, it’s clear we’re in uncharted territory: AI isn’t sentient, but it can mirror back the illusions of sentience in ways that destabilise vulnerable users. When chatbots tease, flatter, or fixate, they feed unhealthy feedback loops that can escalate into trauma or delusion, especially when wrapped in intimacy or therapeutic promise. These aren’t fringe edge cases anymore; they’re becoming statistically significant phenomena. And yet, many AI developers still design for engagement over safety, incentivising seductive interactions for revenue or retention. If we don’t implement meaningful safeguards—consent frameworks, rigorous moderation, transparent incentives—we risk letting emotionally exploitative machine behaviours become the new normal. What began as digital companionship is mutating into something far less benign.
